Communication within the online learning environment remains an integral part of student success, mastery of skills, and productivity. In a proficient communication model, stakeholders, including parents, students, and school administrators, receive consistent updates, especially targeted, authentic feedback on all assignments. Additionally, competent online educators are well-versed in using digital resources to hold synchronous sessions as a form of differentiated instruction.
The Communicate module has prepared me to meet the following iNacol, the International Association for Online Learning, Standards for Quality Online Teaching: The Communicate 2 - Synchronous Sessions assignment highlights how I plan, design and incorporates strategies to encourage active learning, application, interaction, participation, and collaboration in the online environment. (Standard C) The Communicate 3 - Digital Feedback assignment addressed multiple standards. All students thrive on encouraging words, thoughtful analyses and comments concerning assignments, and the instructor’s genuine interest in prompting further study of areas of interest. (Standard D) A best practice for online instructors is to integrate into the feedback direct references to the learning objectives, as well as offer further resources for a deeper examination of the content. (Standard K) Ongoing communication in the online classroom important as in any classroom to promote student achievement. It is critical for stakeholders to be informed of the student's progress and improvement needs. The Communicate 2 - Ongoing Communication assignment showed how I interact in a professional, effective manner with colleagues, parents, and other members of the community to support students’ success. (Standard J) Online teachers must also stay up-to-date on new guidelines. The assignment on Communicate 1 - Communication Laws encouraged legal, ethical, and safe behavior. It was probably the most beneficial as it relate to laws. (Standard E) The Communicate module allowed me to categorize some of the strategies I already use in my class such as video feedback and grading with rubrics. It gave me more ideas of how to use digital resources as feedback and how to ensure legal & safe behaviors.

The ways in which you deliver the feedback or communicate feedback to students and parents is just as important as the actual feedback. Communication between the stakeholders must be ongoing for students to receive effective feedback. In online environments, communication is integral in building relationship that promote student success. Students want to trust the teacher; they want to feel safe in their learning environment. Authentic feedback is needed for students to reflect and learn from their online experiences. Face to face teachers can rely on non verbal clues to gauge if students are understanding the material. Online learner do not have a person to read their face. Teacher must provide them with specific authentic feedback addressing any personal misconceptions they may have.
